Drummer’s Heart Beat Similar To Footballers

In a recent study, drummers performing in rock bands are subjecting themselves to the same workout as footballers, when they perform in concerts. Dr Marcus Smith of the University of Chichester carried out the research.

Drumming for an hour and-a-half lifted the heart rate of Blondie sticksman Clem Burke to the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo’s in a typical football league game. Footballers might moan about putting in 90 minutes work but Dr Smith said,

“Footballers find playing a Champions League game once every two weeks a drain, but musicians are doing it every day when they are on tour. Their fitness levels need to be outstanding.”

The physical demands of his trade meant Burke’s heart averaged between 140 and 150 beats per minute but could go as high as 190, the eight year study revealed. The Clem Burke Drumming Project is working with the government to develop programmes to help overweight youngsters.
